Speaker Series: Sergiu Gherghina

Our next guest of the speaker series of Institute for Political Science is Sergiu Gherghina (University of Glasgow) with the presentation entitled:

"Clarity of Party Cues in Referendums: Explaining Voters’ Perceptions in Eastern Europe"

"The cues provided by political parties to voters are important during referendums. So far, much research has been devoted to their effects on voting behavior but little attention has been devoted to voters’ perceptions about partisan cues. This article addresses this gap in the literature and unveils the reasons behind the psychological processing of party cues. It aims to explain what determines voters to perceive party cues as being clear. It uses individual-level data from an original survey to analyze the perceptions about the cues provided in seven referendums organized on different topics between 2015 and 2019 in six East European countries. The results indicate that trust in the source of the cues, the content of referendum campaigns and active citizenry are strong predictors for the clarity of cues."
